Adding A Planter Box Rather Than A Rail...

Cedar Planter Box Design

Latest Images! The boxes are done and look great. Next is gravel, sand, dirt and you guessed it, PLANTS!

Cedar Planter Box Design

We have a small concrete block wall near a small patio. Beyond the concrete block wall is a drop off that is easily high enough (perhaps 10' in some areas) that a rail is needed. But what options are available instead of a rail? One idea is a planter box. A planter box allows one to grow plants and thus have beauty that is beyond what the average rail can provide. A planter box does however block some view but also provides a wind block. In our case the trade off of some view (we can sit in higher chairs and regain that view) for a wind block (we can sit in lower chairs and be warm and extend the time we can be out on the patio) is well worth it for us. Having a large nearby growing space is also a major bonus. Note that each version is numbered as part of the name of the image.

Modern Garage Door Button And Doorbell Design...

Modern Garage Door Button And Doorbell Design

We wanted a more modern look to our doorbell and garage door opener buttons. We also wanted something of our own design and handiwork so we designed and manufactured our own. Although we do not have a garage door opener hooked up we might some day and the old existing button was looking pretty dated. We used cedar for our design and added brass screws for the doorbell to go with the brass ring around the button and used stainless for the garage door opener with has a black ring. Both buttons light up in the dark. We used NATURAL DECK OIL for the stain.

Fence Design And Ground Slope...

Fence Slope Design

If your land slopes where you plan to build a fence, how you slope the fence or if you slope the fence makes a difference on the overall look and design. We hope these sketches help you with your fence design challenges. Note how the fence appears at the top and also how it performs at the bottom. Also take note of how much dirt you might have to move with each version. Graphics drawn with Inkscape...

Horizontal Fence Design And The Golden Ratio...

Fence design is an interesting challenge. We have been pondering a fence for some time and are getting closer to finalizing the design. We wanted a fence that makes use of design and is more of an artistic architectural statement, something modern and something we have not see elsewhere. With so many fences out there how could we differentiate our fence as designers? One way is to use the Golden Ratio and rethink the use of materials. In Oregon you can legally only have a 6 foot fence and since this is a privacy fence we wanted to use all 6 feet. We wanted the fence to look nice from both sides since the neighbors will see the fence as much as we will. We want a living fence and yet need a fence sooner than later, as growing a fence can take many years in most cases.
