GROW (Grow Regional Organic Wisdom)...

Grow Regional Organic Wisdom

Grow: We grow plants for food and life.
Regional: We strive to learn what grows well in our region.
Organic: Everything is organically grown or grown naturally or natively.
Wisdom: We are gaining wisdom by learning and sharing as group.

The Next Meeting:

  • MEETING DATE: October 25th, Tuesday, at 5:30 p.m. at The Bromley Room. "Also, on Sunday, October 9th, we are gathering people together to go up to the Yagers to help them harvest their food. They need help so we're organizing to spend at least 5 or 6 hours there. We'll be going early, around 8:30 a.m. just in case it is hot that day. If you can come, bring a dish to share, gardening gloves and clippers for the bramble. We will probably bring a couple of shovels as well."
  • LOCATION: The Bromley Room in the Florence Public Library
  • DIRECTIONS:
  • SUMMARY: To be announced after the meeting...

Summary of meeting September 20th, 2011:

  • MEETING DATE: 4:00 PM Tuesday, September 20th, 2011.
  • SUMMARY: To be announced after the meeting...

Summary of meeting August 9, 2011:

  • SUMMARY: The meeting was held at Ann Waters' home and we are still awaiting the summery.

Summary of meeting July 12 2011:

  • We came to a larger group agreement, by consensus, of the name GROW.
  • We decided on a new meeting style, and will begin meeting at different member's yards for a more hands on experience. On Tuesday, August 9, we will meet at Ann Waters'.
  • A lot of people are looking for something they can do to support our efforts at GROW. We will be adding to the site, a running list of ideas for how people can get active, even if they are unable to make it to the meetings.
  • We discussed what each person's interests are in regards to GROW, and a common theme is "What can I grow in my yard?" Meeting on site, in people's yards, will enable each member to contribute what they know about growing in the micro-climate/s of that person's yard.
  • John Getz has offered to take people on a mushroom hunt. John has a depth of knowledge about edible mushrooms in our local area. It was suggested we have a field trip! Those interested, let's organize an outing.
  • I think John Yager said it well, when he expressed the importance of "creating ecologies of biodiversity in our yards." By emphasizing perennial plants in our yards, we create a more sustainable, edible food source that will last into the future.
  • To learn more about consensus, check out this article.

"Ginseng, goldenseal and bloodroot all require moist, humus rich, shady, cool locations. Maple leaves are the ideal mulch for them. We used to own 50 acres or so of wild ginseng ground. I am alive today only because of bloodroot's unique properties. The modern Moh's skin cancer therapy, first done by Dr Moh years ago, originally used bloodroot and zinc chloride. Goldenseal is one of several plants with Berberine as one of its constituents. Another that you could easily grow is Oregon grape. Weaker, but very easy to grow. Only tolerates semi- shade, especially on your aspect. Wasabi is sold by Raintree nursery." John.

May 20 Meeting Summary

Overwintered carrots

At the May 20 meeting we went over a list of potential perennial superfoods for us all to start growing in our yards. To begin, the idea will be for each of us to choose one or more of these plants to grow, and to keep a record of it's success and share this information with each other.

"Let's grow some superfoods!"

Meeting Of People Interested In Growing Clean Food...

19th of February 2011

The next meeting will be Tuesday, June 14 4:30 pm at the Herb Jar. Abby will add the plant list and minutes to this site soon and John is going to give us a list of web sites. Once we have a name I will set up a permanent location on the site for updates and info. The photos are from an earlier visit to local organic farm in February.

People Interested In Growing Clean Food:

Meeting notes

People interested in growing clean food got together in Florence for a meeting of minds, hearts and community spirit.

Here is a brief summary of the April 22nd 2011 meeting.

Summary

The foundation for our gathering seems to be food security, which includes becoming self sufficient as a community, with our food supply. The key importance of organization was discussed, as the organization of our ideas and actions seems vital for a successful group endeavor.
